Giro Donne: “The goal was to keep Soraya Paladin as fresh as possible for the final”

Soraya Paladin finished fifth in the seventh stage (110 kilometres) of the Giro d’Italia Donne on Thursday. She finished in the depleted peloton a few seconds behind Elisa Longo Borghini and Marianne Vos who had separated on the final climb to Puegnago Del Garde. Vos took her second stage win.

“After Lucinda Brand was solo in front, Sabrina Stultiens attempted a counterattack. However, that did not succeed. More serious was the move of a group with Sofia Bertizzolo that closed the gap. The group had a good composition, but the peloton did not let the riders go and was immediately behind them”, says sports director Eric van den Boom.

“In the final, Marta Jaskulska briefly tried to attack, in an attempt to make Liv Racing’s work in the peloton a little easier. Jeanne Korevaar also placed another acceleration when Marta Bastianelli attacked. We wanted to bring Soraya Paladin to the finish as fresh as possible. Considering the strength of the competition, fifth place for Soraya is pretty decent.”
