Giro Rosa: “The sprinters’ teams had too much interest in a sprint today”

The sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia Donne ended in a bunch sprint again on Wednesday. In the stage around the famous Lago di Como, with 155 kilometres the longest of this Giro, Sofia Bertizzolo finished in eighth place. The victory went to Emma Norsgaard.

“It was a beautiful stage around Lagi di Como, although the riders will not have seen much of it. Because the pace was really high”, says sports director Eric van den Boom.

After 60 kilometres Elisa Longo Borghini and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio broke away. “We tried to jump to them, but it didn’t work. The two got a lead of over two minutes. But today’s stage was too easy to lose the strong sprinters. And so the sprinters’ teams took the initiative to close the gap, which they did.”

Liv Racing pulled the card of Sofia Bertizzolo, who like Martha Jaskulska had crashed at the beginning of the stage. “The riders positioned Sofia well for the fast, slightly downhill sprint, after which she achieved a nice eighth place.”
