World champion Lucinda Brand won the first women’s HG Cross of the 2026–27 season in Dendermonde on Sunday 11 October, with the narrowest of gaps to Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado and Denise Betsema after 47 minutes of racing. Brand crossed the line in 47:03, one second ahead of Alvarado and two seconds clear of Betsema, having broken the contest open in the closing laps and then resisted a final regrouping.
The women’s opener was held as part of the Borremans Mosselcross in Grembergen, the first race under the HG Cross branding that replaced the former Exact Cross series. The course was unusually fast and dry compared with Dendermonde’s familiar muddy winter World Cup editions, with little to separate several of the strongest riders for most of the race.
The victory gave Brand an immediate marker for the new cyclocross season. It also provided a reminder that Alvarado and Betsema, each within two seconds, had arrived ready to compete with the world champion rather than merely follow her opening attack.
How it unfolded
Brand made an assertive start and stayed close to the head of the race from the opening lap. Instead of quickly establishing a solo lead, she found herself among a closely matched front group, with Alvarado and Betsema able to match much of the pace. The opening five laps did not produce the separation that often appears when a dominant rider begins the season in strong form.
The turning point came on the sixth lap. Brand raised the speed and pushed her rivals into a more defensive race, using the fast sections to make every acceleration costly. A visible gap began to develop, although the riders behind her did not concede the result. Alvarado and Betsema maintained enough momentum to come back towards the leader as the race approached its finish.
Both challengers reached Brand during the final lap, briefly setting up the possibility of a three-rider sprint. Brand responded with one more sustained acceleration, opening the small margin she needed. The difference at the line was tiny but decisive: Alvarado came closest, while Betsema followed one second farther back.
Aniek van Alphen arrived fourth at 14 seconds, clear of Inge van der Heijden in fifth at 34 seconds. Kristýna Zemanová took sixth just two seconds after Van der Heijden, with Leonie Bentveld in seventh at 44 seconds. Lucia Bramati, Annemarie Worst and Julie Brouwers rounded out the top ten.

Why Brand could make the final separation
A two-second winning margin rarely tells the complete story of a cyclocross race. In Dendermonde, the main selection came late because the quick surface and the relatively small differences in speed made it difficult to ride clear. Riders who could maintain momentum across the course’s obstacles spent much of the race close enough to benefit from the smallest hesitation ahead.
Brand’s acceleration on lap six changed the pattern by forcing others to chase rather than simply take turns at the front. Alvarado and Betsema managed the effort well enough to close the distance, but recovering the gap required energy that Brand could exploit with her final move. Her experience was visible in the decision to attack again rather than wait for a sprint between three riders.
The result was also a strong showing from Betsema. Starting a new season on the podium within two seconds of the world champion gives her a useful performance benchmark, especially as the early autumn calendar offers riders several chances to assess form before the major winter competitions. Alvarado’s response was equally important: she was competitive throughout the race and still had enough speed for second.
Further down the order, Van Alphen was best of the chasing riders but could not bring the front three back. The next group was spread across more than a minute, reflecting the cost of repeated accelerations even when the course did not look especially selective early on. Those gaps may become more pronounced once the autumn weather makes the surfaces heavier.
What the result means for the next HG Cross
The Dendermonde race has little time to settle into history before the next round in Meulebeke on 17 October. The Ter Borcht circuit is being raced in the opposite direction from previous editions and features a sandpit, steps, banks and a washboard section. This should present a different test to the quick, dry tracks of Grembergen, and it gives Alvarado and Betsema a fresh opportunity to put Brand under pressure.
Inge van der Heijden will also have reasons to be optimistic: she won Meulebeke the previous season despite finishing a little farther back at Dendermonde. A change of venue can alter the relative importance of acceleration, cornering and running on short climbs, so the opening result should not be treated as a guaranteed finishing order for next weekend.
Brand nevertheless leaves the opening HG Cross with the win, a clear indication of early form and another example of how she can change her approach when the first attack does not hold. The important part of this result was less the size of her margin than her ability to create it a second time.
