From 16th to 20th October, the Ballerup Super Arena, located northwest of Copenhagen, Denmark, will host the Track World Championships. This prestigious event will see many of the sport’s top track cyclists competing, but notably, Lorena Wiebes, better known for her sprinting feats on the road, will also be participating. The 25-year-old cyclist is set to compete in the Scratch race next month.
Lorena Wiebes’ track cycling credentials
Wiebes, primarily recognised for her road racing success, has an impressive track record on the track as well. She has already clinched several national titles in various events. To date, Wiebes has been crowned Dutch national champion in track cycling nine times. Specifically, she excelled in the Scratch, winning national championships in 2019, 2022, and 2023. Besides the Scratch, she has also achieved national titles in the elimination race, madison, and team pursuit.
Preparing for the Olympics?
Wiebes’ venture onto the track is not merely a one-off. Considering the possibility that the road race course at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics might be too challenging for sprinters, Wiebes is exploring the track as an alternative. This World Championships will serve as her first major test at the highest level, allowing her to gauge her proficiency and potentially broaden her competitive scope.
With her extensive experience and past successes, expectations are high for Wiebes at the upcoming track World Championships. Her participation adds an exciting layer to the event, promising thrilling races and perhaps even more accolades for the talented cyclist.
