On the final day of the Bloeizone Fryslân Tour, the riders faced a 137 km long stage. The race remained closed for a long time as Team Jumbo-Visma was alert at the front, and despite several attacks, no leading group emerged. However, with 30 kilometres to go, a lone attacker got away and took a maximum lead of one and a half minutes. At five kilometres from the finish she was caught and in the sprint Swinkels fell just short of winning the race.
Although the conditions were not perfect for making the difference, Team Jumbo-Visma did everything it could to win the race, sports director Lieselot Decroix said.
“We were really strong as a team and we tried to create echelons a few times, with every one of us being in the first echelon all the time. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough wind to use that tactic. We did a good lead-out for Karlijn in an attempt to win the stage, so all in all, we had a good race.”
After three days of racing in the north of the Netherlands, Decroix looked back on her riders’ performance. “Of course, it’s a shame we didn’t win the overall classification, but we did win the team classification. The way we rode was perfect and the result, second place in the final classification, is not bad. I am delighted.”
