Nils Politt’s unexpected pit stop during Olympic road race at Amélie cafe

Clients at the famous Café des 2 Moulins in central Paris had a surprise encounter during the Olympics road race with German cyclist Nils Politt. Competing in the Olympic Games Men’s Road Race, Politt made an unplanned stop at the café for a toilet break.

Suffering from stomach issues, Politt urgently entered the café in the closing kilometres of the race, which was eventually won by Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel. The establishment, known for its appearance in the 2001 film Amélie, became an unexpected pit stop for Politt, who had more pressing concerns than sightseeing.

Weaving through a crowded café on Rue Lepic, at the base of the Butte Montmartre ascent, Politt quickly found the facilities. After successfully addressing his needs, he received cheers from patrons and spectators as he exited. Politt then rejoined the race, hopping over barriers and mounting his bike, finishing nearly 20 minutes behind Evenepoel.

“I didn’t count how much time it took me,” Politt told reporters afterwards. “It was really warm, we were drinking a lot of water, ate a lot of gels and normally I don’t have problems. But today I had an upset stomach.”

The impromptu stop was a memorable moment in an event marked by tough competition and challenging conditions.
