Sarah Storey (Retired)

Dame Sarah Storey is a retired British cyclist and swimmer who became the most successful British Paralympian in history. After beginning her career in the pool, she switched to cycling in 2005 and went on to dominate para-cycling on both the road and track while also competing successfully in elite able-bodied events.

Career overview

Storey began her Paralympic career as a swimmer at Barcelona 1992 before switching to cycling in 2005. She ultimately won 19 Paralympic gold medals across the two sports, including 14 in cycling, and became Britain’s most successful Paralympian. Storey dominated the C5 individual pursuit, road race and time-trial across five Paralympic cycling campaigns while also competing successfully in able-bodied racing, winning British track titles and narrowly missing selection for the London 2012 Olympic team pursuit squad. At Paris 2024, aged 46, she won both the C5 road time-trial and C4-5 road race to finish her Paralympic career unbeaten in her final Games. Storey announced her retirement from elite competition in July 2026 after more than three decades in international sport.
