Scarlett Souren, the 20-year-old cyclist from Limburg, has capped off a promising season by signing a three-year professional contract with VolkerWessels. After breaking through with the team this year, Sourenโs potential has been rewarded with a long-term deal, confirmed by multiple sources to WielerFlits. The team has also taken steps to apply for ProTeam status with the UCI, aiming to elevate their position on the international cycling stage.
The young sprinter faced a challenging entry into elite racing, largely due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Reflecting on this, Souren said that her early years in the sport were difficult, needing extra time to find her footing. However, this past winter marked a turning point as she took significant strides in her development. Sourenโs performances have cemented her reputation as a rising talent within the womenโs peloton, particularly for her sprinting skills.
VolkerWessels has plans to build its roster around Souren and a core group of strong riders, recognising her potential after a season packed with high finishes. Souren finished fifth in the EPZ Omloop van Borsele, second in the Trofee Maarten Wynants, and fourth in the Veenendaal-Veenendaal Classic. At the European Championships, she placed second in the U23 category, just behind Sofie van Rooijen, who has since joined Team UAE ADQ. Souren further showcased her talents internationally by securing third place overall in the Tour of Chongming Island, a WorldTour event, along with wins in the Ronde van Polen, Giro di Toscana prologue, and Grote Prijs Yvonne Reynders.
With her sights now set on the professional scene, Sourenโs ranking at 35th on the UCI standings speaks to her growing profile. Her rapid development prompted VolkerWessels to act swiftly in securing her future, building a team that can compete on a higher level. The squadโs recent signings, including Lonneke Uneken, who brings WorldTour experience from her years at SD Worx-ProTime, suggest that VolkerWessels is assembling a robust line-up capable of competing with the elite.
