Stage 6 of the 2022 Women’s Tour was expected to be a sprint and that’s what we got. Lorena Wiebes took the expected victory but the excitement of the day came from the battle for the general classification. Starting the day on the same time, Grace Brown was ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini on positions countback. A pair of intermediate sprints offered 3, 2 and 1 seconds and the finish line 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
At the first intermediate sprint, Grace Brown took 3 seconds to move ahead with distance in the GC standings. Kasia Niewiadoma took 1 second to move closer to Longo Borghini. A break hoovered up the points at the second intermediate sprint leaving just one opportunity for Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma – the finish line. With all the sprinters expected to contest it, not many gave Elisa a chance, especially with her reputation for sprinting. Her Trek Segafredo team delivered her beautifully to the front and Longo Borghini did the sprint of her life to finish 3rd. She used Grace Brown’s teammate Clara Copponi’s wheel as a lead-out and just beat Tereza Neumanova to that winning 3rd place finish.
