2025 Omloop van Borsele edition cancelled due to Dutch police shortages

Sofie van Rooijen 2024 Omloop van Borsele

The 2025 edition of Omloop van Borsele has been cancelled, with organisers forced to admit defeat in their efforts to secure enough police escorts for the event. The decision follows confirmation that this year’s NATO conference in the Netherlands has placed additional demands on law enforcement, reducing the number of officers available to support road cycling races.

Despite a call for volunteers only two weeks ago, organisers were unable to find a solution that would allow the race to continue safely. The event, which was due to take place from 25th-27th April, traditionally features a time trial and a one-day road race. Last year, Sofie van Rooijen claimed victory in the main race ahead of Daria Pikulik and Elynor Backstedt.

While Omloop van Borsele has been scrapped for 2025, the Amstel Gold Race will go ahead as planned, with authorities prioritising the Dutch WorldTour events. The loss of Omloop van Borsele is a significant blow for the women’s calendar, particularly for younger riders who have used the race as a stepping stone to bigger competitions and the UCI points that go with it in a season where the totals will matter at the end of the year.
