The iconic La Stelvio Santini is set for a major evolution in 2026, with the introduction of a new gravel event alongside its legendary road granfondo. The fourteenth edition of the event will take place on the weekend of 6 and 7 June 2026, transforming Bormio into a two-day celebration of endurance cycling in the heart of the Alta Valtellina.

Two days, two challenges

For the first time, participants will have the chance to experience both tarmac and trail, as the Saturday gravel event makes its debut in collaboration with 3T, one of Italy’s leading off-road cycling brands. The traditional road event will continue on Sunday, offering the classic trio of routes up the famous Stelvio Pass.

“This new form of cycling is growing strongly in our region,” said Mario Zangrando, the long-time organiser of La Stelvio Santini. “We are excited to offer a gravel experience that is probably unique in the discipline, as it takes place entirely at high altitude. The aim is to combine the great climbs of the Stelvio with the serenity of off-road riding among some of the Alps’ most beautiful landscapes.”

New gravel routes through Alta Valtellina

The gravel event will start and finish in Bormio, tracing scenic roads and trails through Valdisotto, Valfurva, and Valdidentro before reaching the Cancano Lakes. Two route options will be available to suit different abilities:

  • Short route: 44 km with 1,400 metres of climbing
  • Long route: 70 km with 2,000 metres of elevation gain

A highlight of the long route is the Boscopiano gravel climb, a challenging but rewarding ascent offering stunning views of the Cancano valley. The event will follow a format popular in the gravel scene, allowing participants to ride at their own pace, with timed segments determining the rankings. The long route will feature two timed sections, while the short course will have one.

The road to the Stelvio

The La Stelvio Santini remains one of the world’s most famous amateur cycling challenges. The 2026 edition will once again feature three classic routes, all starting in Bormio and finishing at the Stelvio Pass:

  • Long route: 130 km, 4,270 m elevation gain (Bormio – Rogorbello – Mortirolo – Bormio – Stelvio)

  • Short route: 64 km, 2,280 m elevation gain (Bormio – Sondalo – Bormio – Stelvio)

Organised by US Bormiese, the event has grown into one of the premier granfondos in the world, attracting thousands of riders from across the globe every June. From 2026 onwards, the addition of the gravel event ensures that La Stelvio Santini will not only celebrate the legendary climbs of road cycling, but also embrace the adventurous spirit of the gravel movement – all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Italian Alps.
