Primož Roglič won the 2026 European Championships men’s elite individual time trial on home roads in Slovenia, stopping the clock at 28:16.61 to beat Bruno Armirail and Maxime Decomble in Šenčur.
The 36-year-old Slovenian delivered on a course that suited his climbing and descending strengths, adding the European title to an already extensive time-trial record. Armirail secured silver for France, while his compatriot Decomble completed the podium.
Roglič delivers on home roads
The elite men faced a roughly 22km circuit around Šenčur, with the steep Možjanca climb providing the main difficulty before the technical descent and quicker roads towards the finish. It was a different test from a flat power time trial, placing a premium on pacing across the climb as well as speed through the second half of the course.
Decomble was among the earlier leading contenders to set a strong benchmark after starting at 16:40, followed seven minutes later by Armirail. Their rides ultimately stood up for the silver and bronze medals, giving France two places on the podium.
How the 2026 European Championships men’s elite time trial unfolded
The strongest names were concentrated towards the end of the European Championships men’s time-trial start order. Ilan Van Wilder rolled down the ramp at 16:44, Armirail at 16:47 and Roglič at 16:54, before Callum Thornley, Kasper Asgreen, Stefan Küng and Jakob Söderqvist completed the final wave of starters.
Roglič produced the decisive ride, completing the course in 28:16.61 at an average speed of 46.357km/h. Once the Slovenian had crossed the line, the remaining favourites still had the opportunity to dislodge him, but Küng, Asgreen, Söderqvist and Thornley all finished outside the medals.
Van Wilder took fourth behind the French pair, with Küng fifth and Asgreen sixth. Marco Frigo finished seventh for Italy, Söderqvist was eighth, Great Britain’s Thornley ninth and Iván Romeo completed the top 10 for Spain.
A European title for Roglič
The victory adds another major championship success against the clock for Roglič, the Olympic time-trial champion from Tokyo. Winning in Slovenia made this one particularly notable, with the home rider converting one of the clearest opportunities of the final day of the European Championships.
It also came against a field containing several established specialists. Küng had entered among the strongest pure time triallists in the race, while Söderqvist, Armirail, Asgreen and Van Wilder all offered different threats on a course where the climb reduced the advantage of the biggest engines. Roglič’s combination of climbing speed and technical ability ultimately proved the best fit.
