Awen Roberts joins CAMS Alba for 2027 as final rider signing

Welsh rider Awen Roberts will join CAMS Alba for the 2027 season, becoming the Scottish Continental team’s final signing as it completes its roster ahead of a new title-sponsorship agreement. The 21-year-old moves from Canyon SRAM zondacrypto Generation, where she has spent the past three seasons developing through a programme of international road racing.

Alba confirmed the move on Friday, 23 October, bringing another rider with experience on the European calendar into a squad that has combined domestic racing with opportunities against higher-ranked teams. Roberts will race under the CAMS Alba name when the new partnership takes effect next year.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to ride with Alba for the 2027 season. I’m looking forward to developing further in a new environment and to race with my new teammates,” Roberts said in the team’s announcement.

Roberts leaves Canyon SRAM Generation after three seasons

Roberts joined Canyon SRAM Generation ahead of 2024, moving into international elite racing after representing Great Britain as a junior. The development squad gave her experience of longer stage races, more demanding one-day events and working within a team against established professional opposition.

Her background is rooted in Carmarthenshire, where she began cycling with Towy Riders before progressing through Welsh Cycling and the Great Britain junior pathway. In a January interview with The British Continental, she described enjoying harder terrain, learning from team roles and the importance of improving steadily rather than expecting immediate results.

That development is reflected in a varied race record. She has previously taken a podium at the Pionera Race and a top-10 finish at the Gran Premio Ciudad de Eibar, results that showed she could remain competitive when races became selective. Those performances sit alongside less visible work for teammates, an important part of the development-team experience.

Leaving Canyon SRAM Generation does not mean abandoning that learning process. Alba offers a different setting, closer to home, while retaining an international calendar on which Roberts can continue to test herself against strong fields.

National time-trial silver and a Curlew Cup podium in 2026

Roberts has also been competitive on the British domestic calendar during 2026. She finished second in the under-23 category at the British National Time Trial Championships in June, then took third at the Curlew Cup in Northumberland in August, behind Nicola Quaye and Alba rider Arabella Blackburn.

Earlier in the season, she finished fifth overall at The Peak 2 Day and won the second stage. The results point to a rider whose abilities are not limited to one type of race: she has been able to perform against the clock, finish well in demanding domestic road races and cope with shorter stage-race formats.

At Alba, that versatility should be useful across a calendar that includes British National Road Series events and UCI races in Europe. There will be opportunities to pursue her own results while working within a group that already includes riders experienced in the domestic and international pelotons.

A final signing for the CAMS Alba squad

Roberts arrives as Alba prepares for a change of title sponsor. CAMS, the cycling accident management business, will replace Handsling as headline partner in 2027, with the Scottish team competing as CAMS Alba. The partnership was announced earlier in October and is intended to support the team’s established emphasis on rider development.

Her arrival completes a recruitment programme that has also brought in Katie Scott from DAS-Hutchinson, alongside Elena Day, Lily Martin, Mabli Phillips and Phoebe Taylor. Existing riders including Izzy Sharp, Maddie Leech and Mari Porton have agreed to continue with the team.

Alba have already confirmed Scott’s move for 2027, while Sharp’s contract extension and the renewals of Porton and Leech provide continuity as the squad changes sponsors. Roberts will therefore join a mixture of existing team members and other new signings rather than a wholesale rebuild.

For Roberts, the significance is the chance to build on three years of European development racing in a new environment with a British base. Her 2026 results suggest she can contribute across several types of terrain, while the move gives Alba another promising under-23 rider as it finalises preparations for the coming season.
