Carlijn Achtereekte renews with Jumbo-Visma for 1 year

Carlijn Achtereekte

Dutch rider Carlijn Achtereekte has renewed her contract with Jumbo-Visma for a further year. Achtereekte made the switch from long-track speed skating to cycling this year and has done pretty well. Olympic Champion in the 3000m, her first race was the Tour de Suisse and she has been part of the WWT races in Scandinavia, Ceratizit Challenge and Classic Lorient Agglomération. With such a high-quality beginning to her racing career, it’s no surprise that her best individual result is only 30th but she has been doing other roles and learning her way around the peloton in those races.

“In Scandinavia I experienced for the first time what it is like to contribute to the performance of the team. Marianne Vos rode very strong and had already won three stages. Also on the last day we wanted to go for her. That morning I received a clear assignment from the coach. We got the leading group back and were able to set Marianne off well for the last local lap. She fulfilled her favourite role and became first. That was so satisfying. It felt like I had won myself.

2023 will again be a journey of discovery, because I have never ridden a spring classic. But I’m really looking forward to it and I know it’s going to be okay.”

“Carlijn is a diamond in the rough. We see a lot of potential in her that she is not yet fully exploited. We will therefore continue to guide her so that she can fulfill an important role for the team even more often. I expect that she will come into her own, especially in the heavier stage races next year.”
