The Women’s European Championships road race has a very similar history to the time trial this week. Originally a race for U23s and Juniors, it was made available to Elite riders in 2016 and came with a jersey to be worn all year round.
The Women’s European Championships Time Trial has only been in existence since 2016 when it was decided to include an Elites level race. This came after almost 20 years of an U23 and Juniors race with many big name winners.
The Tour of Scandinavia was born out of the Ladies Tour of Norway that ran from 2014-2021, the idea was created to make the race a wider Scandinavian one. Initially called the Battle of the North, in the wake of the war in Ukraine it was renamed to the Tour of Scandinavia. It was supposed to include the racing in Vårgårda as well for its Swedish elements but eventually that organisation pulled out last year.
First run in 1994, the Women’s World Championships time trial has been a remarkably difficult race to establish a dynasty of titles in. The only 3-time run came right at the beginning with Jeannie Longo in 1995-1997. The French rider is the only person to have won 4 titles, adding her final victory in 2001.
