Ellen van Dijk is set to represent the Netherlands at the upcoming Paris Olympics. The experienced rider fractured her ankle in early June, putting her participation in doubt. However, recent performance tests confirmed she is ready for the event, according to a statement by the KNWU.
Six weeks ago, Van Dijk suffered an ankle fracture following a collision during a training camp in Spain. In collaboration with the KNWU, TeamNL, Lidl-Trek, and several medical teams, a treatment and rehabilitation plan was immediately put into action. This included surgery to repair her broken ankle. The goal was to ensure her participation in the Paris Olympics.
“The medical specialists consider it safe to put maximum stress on the ankle while cycling, and the performance tests also show that Van Dijk is ready to compete at the highest level,” reads a press release from the Dutch cycling federation.
Van Dijk’s Determination
“From the moment I fell, I knew what I had to do: prepare myself for the Olympics. It was an intense period, taking things day by day and making progress towards my goal,” Van Dijk explains. “I am grateful for the support from the KNWU and coaches, and the excellent care from the medical staff. I am looking forward to joining the team and showing something special in Paris.”
National coach Loes Gunnewijk is pleased that Van Dijk is ready for the Olympics. “Ellen has worked incredibly hard to not only recover from her ankle fracture but also to maintain her form to compete for medals. We, as a technical staff, have done everything to support her. Compliments to the entire team, including Riejanne Markus as a reserve, who have continued their preparations with great ambition.”
The women’s Olympic time trial will take place on Saturday, 27th July. A week later, on Sunday, 4th August, the road race will be held. In the time trial, coach Gunnewijk is counting on Ellen van Dijk and Demi Vollering, while Lorena Wiebes and Marianne Vos will join them for the road race.
