ToggleThe Colombian only joined Caja Rural-Seguros RGA ahead of the 2026 season, but both sides have already decided to continue the relationship after a campaign in which Gaviria has brought regular high finishes, sprint experience and added depth to one of the younger squads in the peloton.
The team confirmed the extension on Friday 21 August, saying Gaviria’s impact has gone beyond results alone and highlighting the experience he has brought to the wider group.

The deal is the latest confirmed move in ProCyclingUK’s Men’s Cycling Transfers Hub, which tracks signings, extensions and retirements across the professional peloton.

Gaviria’s first Caja Rural season has produced consistent results
Gaviria has not yet taken a victory in Caja Rural-Seguros RGA colours, but his first season with the team has included a long list of strong placings.
He finished second at Ronde van Limburg, second on a stage of the Tour of Oman and second again at the Tour de Hongrie. He also added a third place on another stage in Hungary, fifth at the Pan-American Championships and further top-five finishes at the Tour of Türkiye and Tour de Hongrie.
Those results have kept him competitive against high-level sprinters and underline why Caja Rural-Seguros RGA have been keen to retain him.
The extension also provides continuity after Gaviria only arrived at the team for 2026. ProCyclingUK covered the move when Fernando Gaviria signed for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA following three seasons with Movistar.
At 32, Gaviria is no longer being judged solely through his win total. His positioning, experience and understanding of high-speed finales have become an increasingly important part of his value to a young ProTeam.
Tour de France debut ended with a fractured collarbone
Gaviria was also one of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA’s key riders during the team’s Tour de France debut in 2026, although his race ended prematurely.
He crashed during the bunch finish in Chalon-sur-Saône on Stage 12 and was subsequently diagnosed with a fractured left collarbone.
That forced him to miss Stage 13 and brought his first Tour de France to an early end.
ProCyclingUK’s Tour de France 2026 abandonments tracker records Gaviria as a Stage 13 DNS following the injury, while the Stage 13 race report also reflected how the previous day’s crash had reduced the peloton.
Caja Rural-Seguros RGA say Gaviria is continuing his rehabilitation with the aim of returning to racing during the final part of the season.
The timing was particularly unfortunate because he had entered the Chalon-sur-Saône sprint well positioned before being brought down.
Gaviria’s experience remains important to Caja Rural
Caja Rural-Seguros RGA made clear that the extension is about more than keeping an experienced sprinter on the roster.
Gaviria has raced at the highest level for more than a decade and brings knowledge of the positioning, timing and organisation required in the final kilometres of major races.
That is particularly valuable inside a younger team.
The Colombian can continue targeting results himself while also helping less experienced teammates understand how to approach complicated sprint finales and higher-level stage races.
That balance between leadership and development was part of the attraction when Caja Rural originally signed him for 2026, and his first months with the team appear to have convinced both sides that the relationship is worth extending.
Gaviria still chasing a first win with Caja Rural
The obvious sporting target remains a victory.
Gaviria has accumulated several podiums and top-five finishes this season without yet converting one into a win, despite repeatedly putting himself in contention.
His career pedigree means the possibility remains significant.
Gaviria has more than 50 professional victories and has won stages at both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, including five Giro stage victories and the points classification in 2017.
That record made his move to Caja Rural one of the more eye-catching transfers ahead of the 2026 season.
The task now is to turn the regular placings of his first campaign into victories once he returns from injury.
Another season for one of Colombia’s leading sprinters
The extension gives Gaviria another full season to establish himself within the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA sprint structure.
For the team, retaining him means keeping a proven finisher who can contribute both results and experience.
For Gaviria, it provides continuity after a first season interrupted by the collarbone fracture at the Tour.
His immediate focus remains completing his rehabilitation and returning to competition before the end of 2026.
After that, Fernando Gaviria will remain in Caja Rural-Seguros RGA colours throughout the 2027 season, extending a partnership that began only this year but has already convinced both sides to continue.
