Jolien d’Hoore wins Gent Wevelgem

In the early afternoon, the peloton started in Ieper under the iconic MenenPoort. The team rode a compact race where Lonneke, Christine, Chantal and Amalie worked hard to keep Jolien and Amy well-positioned throughout the race. On the final climb of the Kemmelberg Amy and Jolien were very well positioned. Here the bunch broke with 6 riders leading the race with Amy and Jolien. This group eventually grew to 11 riders with amongst others Vollering, Longo Borghini, Deignan and Kopecky. These eleven riders defended a lead of 30-40 seconds over the chasing group where Canyon and Sunweb worked hard to close the gap.

In the final kilometres Amy Pieters sacrificed herself for Jolien and kept the pace. She even attacked in the final kilometres. Any other attacks were neutralised by Amy. In the final sprint, Jolien beat Lotte Kopecky and finished off a great team effort today.

“I am super happy. I felt very strong, I trained hard the last couple of weeks on interval and climbing. That paid off today, and of course a big thank you to Amy Pieters”
