Jonas Vingegaard has abandoned the Tour de France 2026, forced out of the race by a crash roughly 20km from the finish of stage 15 to Plateau de Solaison.
The Visma-Lease a Bike leader went down alongside Sepp Kuss and UAE Team Emirates XRG pair Isaac del Toro and Brandon McNulty. Del Toro, McNulty and Kuss were all quickly back on their bikes. Vingegaard stayed down.
Race doctors attended to him at the roadside and placed his right arm in a sling before he was taken away in a medical vehicle. Team confirmation followed shortly after: Vingegaard’s race is over.

What happened
The crash came on the valley road before the final climb to Plateau de Solaison, with the peloton, led by Visma-Lease a Bike, working to close down the day’s large breakaway.
Vingegaard, Kuss, Del Toro and McNulty all hit the ground together. The UAE pair and Kuss were able to remount straight away. Vingegaard could not, and stayed on the ground as team staff and race medics reached him.
Confirmation of the abandonment came shortly afterwards. Visma-Lease a Bike’s entire race plan for the day, built around chasing down the escape, immediately lost its purpose.
What it means for the stage
The peloton sat up almost as soon as news of the crash spread.
That is a significant shift in the day’s tactics. Visma had been driving the chase behind a 24-rider breakaway, with Victor Campenaerts and Bruno Armirail doing much of the work on the valley roads. With their leader out of the race, that chase lost its reason to continue.
The move now has a far clearer run at the stage than looked likely an hour earlier. Mauro Schmid had already ridden clear of the rest of the breakaway before the crash, building a lead over a chase group before the peloton’s pursuit stalled completely.
What it means for the general classification
Vingegaard went into stage 15 second overall, 4:30 behind race leader Tadej Pogačar, with Remco Evenepoel third and Paul Seixas fourth. His exit removes Pogačar’s closest rival at a stroke, with the race not yet even at its hardest remaining terrain.

Who now becomes Pogačar’s main challenger is an open question. Evenepoel and Seixas were both already more than five minutes back before stage 15 even reached its final climb, and neither has looked capable of matching Pogačar’s pace in the mountains so far this Tour.

What we still don’t know
The stage itself is not finished, and the extent of Vingegaard’s injuries has not yet been confirmed beyond the arm sling seen at the roadside. A fuller medical update and a statement from Visma-Lease a Bike are expected once the race reaches Plateau de Solaison.
