Karlijn Swinkels dominates AG Tour de la Semois with 2nd stage victory

Karlijn Swinkels of Jumbo-Visma demonstrated her dominance by claiming victory in both stages of the AG Tour de la Semois. The 24-year-old Dutch rider took the final classification honours of the two-day race.

The second stage, which started and finished in Bertrix, saw a hilly terrain. Throughout the 120km circuit, many breakaway attempts were made. Anastasia Carbonari from the UAE Development Team was the first to make a move. The national champion of Latvia managed to gain a 15-second lead but was soon caught by the peloton. Others like Schweikart, De Vries, and Kuijstermans also tried to break free but were reeled in shortly before the finish.

Swinkels and Clara Koppenburg of Cofidis managed to distance themselves from the main group. A two-up sprint on an uphill finish was the decider, and Swinkels clearly took the win. Despite this, Koppenburg climbed to the second position in the overall standings, overtaking Noemi Rüegg, Swinkels’ teammate, who settled for third.

In third place was Swiss cyclist Linda Zanetti, who has consistently placed herself in the Top 10 of major races. After securing a sixth position in the first stage, the Swiss U23 national champion came third in the second and final stage of the AG Tour de la Semois. Notably, both stages were won by Karlijn Swinkels, who is set to represent UAE Team ADQ in 2024.

Besides clinching both stages and the overall, Swinkels also triumphed in the points classification. However, she had to concede the mountain jersey to Rüegg.
