Omloop van het Hageland is the second part of the Opening Weekend for the women’s peloton with no Kuurne Brussels Kuurne in sight. This race has been running for 20 years now and has undergone the first part of a modern refresh this season. Thanks to Fenix, more sponsorship has been secured, and there is a stronger platform for live coverage, too. The race has usually been the preserve of tough sprinters who are able to crest the repeated short climbs—the likes of Marta Bastianelli and Lorena Wiebes are repeat winners. That was slightly torn up last year when Kristen Faulkner showed that a 65km solo breakaway can also get the job done.
There’s no Wiebes here this year but a first Omloop van het Hageland for Anna van der Breggen since 2013. You imagine if she’s in the hunt for the win that she will have to try and do a Faulkner, something that would’ve been very possible in her first career stint. Puck Pieterse and Pfeiffer Georgi will consider themselves strong enough to be able to hang onto her coattails though. And if it all comes down to a sprint, will the likes of Charlotte Kool, Chiara Consonni and Sofie van Rooijen all be there to contest it with their fast legs?
