The women’s team at Cofidis is gearing up for its fourth season with bold ambitions to join the Women’s WorldTour in 2025. With a reinforced squad, a more international roster, and new staff appointments, the French outfit is preparing for an important year ahead.
Cofidis has set a clear goal for the coming season: to secure promotion to the Women’s WorldTour by delivering consistent results across the calendar. The team will compete in major classics, grand tours, and a range of stage races, including an expanded presence in Belgium and the Netherlands. For the first time, the team aims to participate in both the Vuelta a España and the Tour de France Femmes.
Directrice sportive Mélanie Briot spoke about the team’s objectives, noting that while the competition is fierce, their aspirations are realistic. “This will guide our entire year,” she said. “Even if the level is high and very competitive, we know it’s achievable.” Briot added that the Tour de France Femmes, with its challenging start in Brittany and hilly early stages, aligns well with the team’s strengths.
Magnus Bäckstedt brings experience to the team
One of the most notable changes for 2024 is the addition of Magnus Bäckstedt to the staff. The Swedish former professional, who famously won Paris-Roubaix in 2004, joins as a directeur sportif. Known for his ability to develop riders, Bäckstedt was instrumental in the success of Canyon//SRAM Racing during his previous tenure. He is expected to play a key role in guiding Cofidis through the classics season and beyond.
Bäckstedt expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge. “Cofidis is a prestigious team, well known in the cycling world,” he said. “The challenge with the women’s team is exciting, and I really appreciated the approach of Cédric [Vasseur] and Mélanie [Briot]. I want to bring my experience, particularly in the classics, but also in all the races where I’ll be asked to help the team grow and achieve its goal of reaching the Women’s WorldTour.”
A growing and international team
Cofidis has expanded its roster to 16 riders for 2024, featuring a mix of returning talents and new signings. Leaders like Victoire Berteau and Julie Bego will be supported by fresh additions, including former world champion Amalie Dideriksen and climbing specialist Clara Koppenburg, who returns to the team after a year away. The team now represents seven nationalities, signalling a more international focus.
Young talent Ema Comte is also set to join the team in August after finishing her studies. Reflecting on her upcoming move, she said, “I’m very happy to join Cofidis. Having been a stagiaire last year helped me understand the team and adapt. I can’t wait to rejoin my teammates, support them, and continue to develop.”
Cofidis has bolstered its backroom staff alongside the rider changes. A new performance cell, led by Arthur Quilliec, aims to optimise the athletes’ preparation with training camps and cross-team collaboration. In addition, Gaëtan Lemoine joins as a directeur sportif and will focus on fostering team cohesion. Lemoine described the move as “a very motivating project” and praised the team’s collective spirit.
