Marta Cavalli takes 3rd place on stage 4 of the Giro
After the start of the Giro Donne 2022 last Thursday, with a prologue in Cagliari, and two stages in Sardinia, all the teams joined yesterday, during a transfer day, the continent and the city of Cesena for the fourth stage.
On the program for the day, 120 kilometres around the town of Cesena, and the start of the mountains with three passes listed in the mountain classification.
It was during the ascent of the second difficulty of the day, the “Colle del Barbotto”, that Marta Cavalli escaped alongside Mavi Garcia (UAE Team ADQ) and Annemiek Van Vleuten (Movistar). During the last climb of the day, and 12 kilometres from the finish, Marta was let go by her two opponents and crossed the finish line in third position.
Marta Cavalli thus takes third place in the Giro Donne, and also takes the “Azzura” jersey as the best Italian.
“Today was a difficult day, the last 50 kilometres were only uphill and downhill. After the Barbotto climb, I was in a breakaway with VanVleuten and Garcia. We rode together until the last climb where I was let go after a few attacks. In the end, I gave everything to limit the gap. There are 6 difficult stages ahead, the watchword: stay focused*!” (*Stay focused)
