Back in Italy the squad rode the Giro dell’Emilia today. A hilly classic covering 87.2km with an uphill finish on the San Luca. In the last ten kilometres the peloton was able to chase down the two leaders Sofia Collinelli and Laura Tomasi. They all came back together before the start of the final climb.
Demi Vollering tells: ‘’I felt really good from the start and my teammates gave me their trust, just like they did last year. They all did a great job keeping me out of the wind during the entire race and getting me in the front before the final climb. Unfortunately, at the start of the climb my chain came off and I had to get off my bike. By the time I fixed it I was already far behind.’’
Cecilie Uttrip Ludwig was the first to cross the finish line on top. After the mechanical problems Demi came in first for the team and finished 16th. Right before the final climb Marit Raaijmakers got caught in a big crash and injured her hand. Luckily, she seems okay and all the girls were able to finish.
‘’I am really proud of the team and I feel good about my shape. At the same time I am disappointed that I couldn’t compete for the win today. But that’s also part of cycling.’’ – Demi
