The 2025 GP El Salvador concluded with a flat-out sprint through the streets of Sonsonate, where Italy’s Laura Tomasi surged ahead in the final metres to take victory in a tightly contested finish. The one-day race, covering 92 kilometres from San Salvador to Sonsonate, featured a largely flat profile with a slight uphill drag to the finish, perfectly suited to the day’s fastest riders.
From the flag drop, the peloton kept a steady pace under the Central American sun, with few successful attacks managing to gain any real ground. With over 100 riders from 26 nations on the start line, and a large Colombian contingent present, the tempo was high throughout but controlled, with the bunch keen to keep things together for a sprint.
Despite a few late accelerations in the final 10 kilometres, the race always looked destined to come down to a bunch finish. The final approach into Sonsonate was fast and technical, requiring smart positioning and sharp instincts. In the last kilometre, several teams began to mass at the front, but Tomasi made her move at just the right moment on the slightly rising finish straight.
As the pace ramped up, Tomasi edged ahead of Sara Fiorin and Mia Griffin, timing her sprint with precision to seal the win by a clear bike length. The run to the line was rapid and tightly packed, with the top five riders all recording the same finishing time.
María Paula Latriglia and Karen Villamizar were the best of the Colombians, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, after holding strong wheels into the final sprint. Sandra Alonso finished sixth, while Usoa Ostolaza, a double stage winner during the Tour de El Salvador, closed out the top ten.
The victory marked Tomasi’s first pro win of her career and the third for Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi during their trip to El Salvador. At 25, Tomasi showed she can deliver under pressure, especially when backed by a team committed to her as the designated finisher.
“We are very happy with Laura’s win,” said sports director Peio Goikoetxea. “She was our clear plan for the day, and she executed it perfectly. She’s become a very important rider for this team – both when it comes to working and being there in the finale.”
Mia Griffin, who won stage 2 of the Tour El Salvador ahead of Tomasi earlier in the week, continued her strong run of form with another podium.
“It’s great to be on the podium again,” said Griffin. “The team has done a lot of work out here, and it’s been rewarding to be consistently in the mix.”
