Van der Breggen and Vollering included in Dutch Olympic team

National coach Loes Gunnewijk has announced the Women’s road team for the for the Netherlands for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Anna van der Breggen and Demi Vollering from Team SD Worx are selected. The other two places are for Annemiek van Vleuten and Marianne Vos.

Van der Breggen and Van Vleuten will also ride the Olympic time trial. For Vos it is the fourth participation in the Olympic Games, for Van Vleuten the third time, Van der Breggen has been selected for the second time and Demi Vollering is making her debut.

With the winners of the last Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallone and Liège-Bastogne-Liège as well as the current World- and European champions on the road and the time trial, the Dutch team is once again one of the favorites for the Olympic Games. In the past two editions, our country won gold in the road race. In 2012 (London) Vos managed to set a strong team performance, four years later (Rio) Anna van der Breggen succeeded her.

National coach Loes Gunnewijk says now once again to go for the highest possible result with the selected riders.

“That is our emphatic common goal. We have a very strong group of riders at our disposal, from which we could select three full-fledged Olympic teams. That is really a luxury position. Ultimately, a team was chosen that is prepared for all scenarios. A very difficult course awaits the riders with 2800 altitude meters and high humidity. We are one of the favorite teams, but we are used to that and the riders can handle it very well. It remains sport, there are no guarantees in advance. It need to come all togheter that day, but we have  one goal: an other gold medal and a third consecutive title. In the time trial we also have a chance for the highest possible result with two of the best time trial female riders in the world. So we are going to Tokyo with great ambition. ”

“I am very happy” responds a very enthusiastic Vollering. “To be honest, I was not that busy with it in the past few days. After the phone call from national coach Loes Gunnewijk, I was relieved and very happy. I’ve hoped for it to be honest, but you are only sure after such a phone call. Thanks to my team I showed what I can do at important moments. It is very special to been selected for such a big race. We have so many good riders in the Netherlands, it is an honor that I have been chosen! “.
