Vos and Van der Poel honoured as the 2024 Dutch Cyclists of the Year

Marianne Vos has once again been named Dutch Cyclist of the Year, receiving the Keetie van Oosten-Hage Trofee for a record-breaking tenth time. The 37-year-old secured the honour at the annual cycling gala in Utrecht after a 2024 season that included Olympic silver and a gravel world title.

Despite her age, Vos continued to showcase her winning form. This year alone, she triumphed at races like Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Dwars door Vlaanderen, and the Amstel Gold Race. Though she finished fourth in both Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, she managed to secure the points classification at the Tour de France, even without a stage win. She also added two stage victories in the Vuelta a Espaรฑa, winning the points classification there, and claimed the overall win at the Tour of Catalonia. At the World Championships in Zurich, Vos placed eighth in the road race, rounding off an impressive season.

Reflecting on her achievement, Vos acknowledged the unique nature of her season, saying, “Winning on such varied terrains and still competing at the highest level at this stage of my career is something I take great pride in.”

Other nominees for the award included Fem van Empel, Demi Vollering, Chantal van den Broek-Blaak, Puck Pieterse, Pauliena Rooijakkers, and Lorena Wiebes.

At the same event, Mathieu van der Poel claimed his fourth Gerrit Schulte Trofee for the best male cyclist of the year. The 29-year-oldโ€™s 2024 season was nothing short of remarkable, with victories in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, adding to his sixth cyclocross world title and a win at the gravel world championships. Van der Poel also secured third place in the World Road Race Championships in Zurich.

Speaking after the ceremony, Van der Poel said, โ€œItโ€™s been a year full of highs, and to win both road classics and off-road titles is very special. Iโ€™m honoured to receive this award again.โ€

Tibor Del Grosso was named Talent of the Year, receiving the Gerrie Knetemann Trofee. The 21-year-old had a breakout season, claiming the U23 World Cyclocross Championship in Tabor and the Dutch U23 road title. Del Grosso also delivered strong performances at international events, finishing seventh at the European Championships and eighth at the U23 World Championships.

The men’s teamsprintersโ€”Roy van den Berg, Harrie Lavreysen, and Jeffrey Hooglandโ€”earned the Team of the Year award. The trio secured Olympic gold in Paris and became world champions for the sixth time at the recent World Championships in Denmark.
