British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died aged 19 following a serious accident during Stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal.
The Welsh rider, younger brother of Netcompany Ineos professional Josh Tarling, was competing for the NSN Development Team during Friday’s 166.8km stage from Melgaço to Fafe when the accident occurred.
The Volta a Portugal organisers confirmed Tarling’s death shortly after the incident, describing it as a “serious accident” during the eighth stage of the race.
Information available so far indicates that a car was involved, although the precise circumstances have not yet been established publicly. A Bola have reported that it was ‘as a result of an accident in Arcozelo, near Ponte de Lima, involving a non-campervan vehicle whose driver allegedly disregarded the authorities’ signage, traveling in the opposite direction to the race.’
The race organisers have said further information will be provided when circumstances allow.
NSN Cycling confirms Tarling’s death
NSN Cycling confirmed Tarling’s death in a statement on Friday evening.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today.
“Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.
“Rest in peace, Fin.”
Tarling had been racing for the team’s development squad during the 2026 season as he continued his progression at under-23 level.
Volta a Portugal neutralised through to Fafe
The organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation issued a joint statement following Tarling’s death.
They said they “deeply regret” announcing his passing following the accident and offered their “most heartfelt condolences” to Tarling’s family, teammates, NSN Development Team and his friends and loved ones.
The race was neutralised through to the finish in Fafe, rather than being stopped immediately, with riders completing the remainder of the stage without racing.
The scheduled podium ceremony was also cancelled as a sign of respect and mourning.
Organisers added that further information would be released “as soon as conditions allow it to do so”.
No official account has yet explained how the accident happened.
A car was involved but circumstances remain unclear

It is understood that a car was involved in the accident, but there has been no official confirmation of whether it was travelling along the road or was stationary when the collision occurred.
Neither the Volta a Portugal statement nor the initial statement from NSN Development Team provides further information about the sequence of events.

Tarling represented Great Britain on road and track
Tarling was one of Britain’s emerging young riders and had represented Great Britain in both road and track cycling.
The 19-year-old was continuing his development with NSN during 2026 and had competed internationally as he made the transition towards senior racing.
He came from a prominent cycling family. His older brother Josh Tarling has established himself at WorldTour level with Netcompany Ineos and has represented Great Britain at Olympic, World and European Championship level.
Finlay was developing along his own path through the sport, combining road and track racing before joining the NSN development structure.
NSN remembers Tarling as a son, brother and friend
NSN’s statement focused on Tarling as a person rather than on his results or future potential as a rider.
The team described him as a much-loved member of its organisation while emphasising that he was first and foremost “a son, a brother, and a friend to so many”.
Their condolences were directed specifically to his parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh and everyone close to him.
Finlay Tarling was 19 years old.
