Italian Cyclist Valentina Basilico Wins Grand Prix El Salvador

Valentina Basilico, representing the Eneicat-CM Team, claimed victory on the second day of racing in El Salvador, in the Grand Prix El Salvador. Covering a distance of 92 kilometres from the Salvador del Mundo to near Metrocentro Sonsonate. Basilico’s time of two hours and 20 minutes secured her the win.

The race route began at Salvador del Mundo, passed through various landmarks including the Integración multilevel interchange, Quezaltepeque road, Opico, Claudia Lars Perimeter, Sacacoyo, and finally reached Metrocentro Sonsonate.

Despite plenty of late attacks and increases in pace from Anna Kiesenhofer, the Olympic champion couldn’t quite manage to go clear. So ultimately it came down to an intense sprint finish, where Basilico emerged as the victor in the Grand Prix El Salvador. The Italian cyclist showcased her speed, beating her rivals from Roland, the Russian rider Tamara Dronova and Dutch rider Sylvie Swinkels who secured second and third place respectively.

“Second day of racing, my legs felt looser, but the heat was intense. I’m very happy because my team needed the points,” Basilico commented after the race. The Eneicat-CM Team celebrated Basilico’s victory, marking her first win in their colours.

The first edition of the Salvadoran race covered mostly flat terrain, with a slightly inclined finish. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, Basilico’s determination led her to triumph. At just 20 years old, Basilico has already claimed victories in cycling competitions across Europe and the Americas. Her other UCI victories came in Argentina but she’s also been a regular winner on the domestic Italian race scene too.
