Kopecky rides to victory as favourite at Dwars door het Hageland

Lotte Kopecky 2023 Dwars door het Hageland

Lotte Kopecky continued her strong 2023 season with a win at Dwars Door het Hageland. Unfortunately not televised and with limited race radio outside of the convoy, information about the race was hard to get hold of. Raced over 128km from Aarschot to Diest, it was punctuated with gravel sections and the cobbled climb up to the citadel in Diest, where the race would finish at the top on the final lap.

The 3rd edition of the race, won by Chantal van den Broek-Blaak and Ilaria Sanguineti previously, it would be a chance for someone new to take the victory. No early break was allowed to get some distance but the gravel sections did create splits in the peloton. About halfway through the proceedings, a large group of 35 riders had gone clear. Pre-race favourite Charlotte Kool wasn’t amongst them however due to a crash that caused an abandon.

Heading into the final phase of the race, attacks saw Dwars Door de Westhoek winner Pfeiffer Georgi and Christina Schweinberger try to clear, with Alison Jackson also trying her luck solo as well. However, whilst the front bunch continued to thin, no rider could make a true difference out front. SD Worx’s driving at the front saw that group down to 20 riders going through the line for the final time. The final ascent saw Kopecky ride away from her rivals with plenty of time to celebrate. Behind her Christina Schweinberger and Pfeiffer Georgi sprinted for the podium placings, with Lieke Nooijen a few seconds back in 4th place.
