The 2025 spring classics season kicks off with Omloop het Nieuwsblad Women once again this year. After racing in Australia, the sun, and the warmth of Spain and the Middle East, we’re now back to tough racing in horrible, cloudy conditions in Belgium! The race is 137.9km long this year and finishes with the old Tour of Flanders setup of the legendary Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg before heading on a fast run-in to the line at Ninove. There isn’t too much wind to speak of for today’s race, so that shouldn’t be a factor like it can be, so anyone with a gap on the Muur may be able to see it all the way home. A fast sprint finish is likely to be needed though, as a solo finish is exceedingly rare.
Pre-race favourites include the likes of Demi Vollering and Lorena Wiebes, with both of the former teammates desperate to get this race onto their palmares after a couple of near misses. Both have finished 2nd, with Vollering losing a surprising sprint-a-deux to Annemiek van Vleuten, who’d been forced to work in the wind for over 10km before the finish. Wiebes has often won the bunch sprint behind the lead group,p but her climbing looks increasingly better, and she’ll contend once more. Especially as she won’t be doing the Omloop van het Hageland tomorrow either.
