Lorena Wiebes Takes Team DSM’s Third Stage Win At Women’s Tour

Lorena Wiebes rounded out a successful Women’s Tour for Team DSM with an impressive sprint victory on the sixth and final stage into Oxford. Following dominant sprint wins on stages two and three, Wiebes and Team DSM once again showed that they were the fastest in the race, wrapping up the Points Classification in the process.

The stage was a very controlled one with the teams of the GC contenders keen to battle it out for the bonus seconds on offer, meaning that there was no real breakaway for much of the stage. Staying safe and out the wind for as long as possible, as well as represented when dangerous groups did go clear, Team DSM set about controlling the pace with Megan Jastrab and Leah Kirchmann towards the finale to keep things together for a sprint, closing the gap to three late escapees within the final 10 kilometres.

Heading into Oxford for the finish, the route was a twisty, technical one to the line and having lost a bit of position the team had to switch from the original plan of setting Charlotte Kool up for the finish to racing for Wiebes who dug deep to get to the front by the line and take the stage victory.

After the stage, Wiebes commented on the win: “I think we did again a really good job with controlling the race today with Megan and Leah controlling it when the three were in front. We tried to use other teams with the lead-out and made some mistakes. The plan was actually to sprint with Charlotte so I have double feelings with this result, this is not quite how we want it to turn out. So I can learn from this and take it to the next one.”
