Sam Welsford leaves Netcompany INEOS after one season to join Team Jayco AlUla

Sam Welsford will leave Netcompany INEOS after a single season to join Team Jayco AlUla for 2027, bringing one of Australia’s fastest road sprinters into the country’s WorldTour team.

The move ends Welsford’s time with INEOS a year earlier than originally planned. He joined the British team on a two-year contract for 2026 and 2027, but will instead begin next season with Team Jayco AlUla.

For the Australian team, the signing adds a proven bunch sprinter with a particularly strong record at home. Welsford has won seven stages of the Tour Down Under across 2024, 2025 and 2026, making him one of the most successful sprinters in the recent history of Australia’s WorldTour race.

Welsford leaves INEOS after one season

Welsford’s move to INEOS had been framed as a chance to build a more consistent sprint programme around him, but the partnership will end after only one year. His 2026 season still produced an early WorldTour win when he won Stage 3 of the Tour Down Under, taking his career total at the race to seven stage victories.

He remained competitive after returning to Europe, finishing second on a stage of Tirreno-Adriatico and third at the Copenhagen Sprint. Those results showed that the 30-year-old still has the speed to compete against the strongest sprint fields, even if his first INEOS season did not develop into a long run of victories.

Team Jayco AlUla add another clear sprint option

Welsford gives Team Jayco AlUla another rider who can be sent to races with a clear brief to finish the job in bunch sprints. That should be particularly valuable at the Tour Down Under, where his record already makes him an obvious stage leader whenever the route offers a fast finish.

The Australian connection also makes the move a natural one. Welsford developed through Australia’s track system before committing fully to road racing, and he was part of the Australian team pursuit squad that won Olympic gold in Paris in 2024. He has since established himself as a specialist road sprinter rather than a rider moving between the two disciplines.

Team Jayco AlUla already have several riders capable of finishing quickly, but Welsford brings a more specialised sprint profile. His presence should give the team a clearer option for flat WorldTour stages while allowing riders such as Michael Matthews to continue targeting harder finales and one-day races.

A move that had been building for a year

Welsford had been linked with Team Jayco AlUla before joining INEOS, so the 2027 move brings him to a team that had already shown interest in adding him to its sprint group. This time the transfer has been completed rather than remaining a possibility.

It also gives Welsford another change of WorldTour team after previous spells with DSM, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and Netcompany INEOS. The common thread has remained his sprinting: when races are flat enough and the positioning is right, he has repeatedly shown he can turn that speed into WorldTour victories.

For Team Jayco AlUla, the attraction is straightforward. Welsford is Australian, already proven in the team’s most important home race and still capable of competing with elite sprint fields. From 2027, they will have the chance to build those opportunities around him directly.
