Career overview

Matthews turned professional with Rabobank in 2011 after winning the under-23 world road race title in 2010. A punchy sprinter who excels on harder finishes, he has won stages at the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, as well as the 2017 Tour points classification. His one-day record includes three victories at GP Québec, GP Montréal, Bretagne Classic and Eschborn-Frankfurt. After four seasons with Team Sunweb, he returned to the Australian GreenEDGE organisation in 2021 and is contracted through 2027. A pulmonary embolism ruled him out of the 2025 Tour de France, but he returned to racing and won the Ruta de la Cerámica in January 2026 before earning selection for the Montréal World Championships.
