After last Sunday’s victory, Team Jumbo-Visma Women has been unable to compete for the win in the Flèche Wallonne three days later. Marianne Vos was the first rider of the Dutch formation to finish eleventh on the steep Wall of Huy.
Anna Henderson try to put in a striking performance by being in a breakaway. Together with her two fellow escapees, the British rider gained more than a minute on the Côte de Haut-Bois, but at twenty kilometres from the finish it was up to the favourites. Annemiek van Vleuten accelerated and had several big names in her wheel. Vos could not go along and therefore could not play a significant role in the final. Anna van der Breggen eventually proved to be the strongest on the steep final climb.
“ON THE PENULTIMATE CLIMB THE RACE EXPLODED. WHEN THEY ACCELERATED, WE HAD TO LET THEM GO.”MARIANNE VOS
Vos looked back on a tough race and confessed that she lacked the right legs to go with the favourites. “A very tough race today. We worked well as a team. It was a perfect situation with Anna in the breakaway. On the penultimate climb the race exploded. Together with Anouska Koster and Julie Van de Velde I was in the first group. When they accelerated, we had to let them go. Then we put everything on trying to get back in the front. At the foot of the Wall we saw that we were not going to succeed. I still tried to get a good result however.”
