Tour of Britain to show live rider performance data in women’s WorldTour broadcast first

The Lloyds Tour of Britain will integrate live rider performance data into its television coverage in 2026, including what organisers say will be the first use of live rider data within the broadcast of a Women’s WorldTour stage race.

The initiative brings together British Cycling Ventures, race insights partner Elixirr and Velon, the technology and media company owned by a group of leading professional cycling teams.

Live performance data will be available during both the women’s and men’s editions of the Tour of Britain, giving commentators and broadcasters access to additional information on how riders are performing as the races develop.

For the women’s race in particular, organisers are presenting the project as a milestone in the development of cycling coverage.

“This will be the first time live rider data has been integrated with the broadcast of a women’s World Tour stage race,” the race said in announcing the initiative.

The timing is significant. The Tour of Britain Women 2026 begins on Wednesday 19 August and expands to five stages for the first time in its current era, with a strong Women’s WorldTour field racing from Cockermouth to Royal Leamington Spa.

What data will Tour of Britain viewers see?

Velon’s technology will supply a live rider performance feed throughout both races.

The intention is to provide more context around what is happening on the road rather than relying only on time gaps, speed, gradients and television pictures.

That could allow commentators to explain the intensity of attacks, how hard riders are working on climbs, and the physical differences between riders inside a breakaway or chasing group.

The information will also be used away from the main television broadcast.

Tour of Britain social channels are expected to publish graphics based on the performance data, alongside video content designed to show more of the riders’ and teams’ perspective during the race.

The precise metrics shown may vary during the broadcast, but the central idea is to give viewers a clearer impression of the physical demands behind the racing rather than simply showing where riders are positioned on the road.

Women’s Tour of Britain gets WorldTour broadcast first

The women’s Tour of Britain steps into particularly significant territory because live rider performance data has not previously been incorporated into the broadcast of a Women’s WorldTour stage race in this way.

Jonathan Day, Director of Events for British Cycling Ventures, described the development as part of a broader attempt to improve how both editions of the race are presented.

“Through our partnership with Velon and Elixirr, fans will enjoy a richer viewing experience, with access to live rider data and unique performance insight across both races.

“The transmission of live rider performance data at a women’s WorldTour stage race for the first time is a significant milestone, and reflects our shared commitment to use innovation to elevate women’s sport.”

The development arrives alongside a strong sporting edition of the race. The Tour of Britain Women 2026 contenders preview includes Lotte Kopecky, Kim Le Court-Pienaar, Ally Wollaston and several other riders capable of shaping the GC battle across the five stages.

That should give the new data feed plenty of meaningful race situations to explain rather than simply producing novelty graphics.

Why the Great Orme could make the data particularly useful

The 2026 Tour of Britain Women route contains several stages where live performance information could add genuine context.

Stage 3 finishes on the Great Orme, where a short but steep final climb should produce one of the clearest tests of the main GC contenders.

Television pictures can show which riders are attacking and who is losing contact, but live performance data potentially adds another layer.

It could demonstrate how severe an acceleration is, whether a rider is sustaining an unusually high effort and how quickly that effort changes once the road steepens.

Stage 4 through Mid Wales should offer another useful test.

Elixirr is already the Official Race Insights Partner of the Lloyds Tour of Britain, and the addition of Velon’s rider data expands that role.

The aim is not simply to put more numbers on screen.

That distinction matters in cycling because performance can sometimes be difficult to judge from television pictures alone.

A rider may appear relatively comfortable while producing an enormous effort. Another can look visibly distressed while still maintaining similar speed.

Live rider information potentially gives commentators another tool for explaining those situations as they happen.

Velon brings a decade of live race data experience

Velon has been working with live rider data in professional cycling for around a decade.

The company is owned by professional teams and has previously worked across major races to provide live performance information and onboard content.

Chief executive Graham Bartlett said bringing that technology to Britain’s flagship stage races represents an important expansion.

“Velon has been at the forefront of live race data for a decade now, always seeking new ways to bring the race alive for the fans and now to make it safer for the riders,” Bartlett said.

“Partnering with British Cycling and Elixirr for the flagship road race in the UK is something we are very excited about for both the women’s and men’s races.

“We know that Elixirr will bring a new way of using and showing the power of live rider data from Velon.”

Why live rider data could improve cycling broadcasts

Cycling has historically offered viewers less live performance information than many other major sports.

Fans can see television pictures, race speed, gradients and time gaps, but much of the physical effort taking place inside the peloton remains invisible.

Performance data can potentially make that effort more understandable.

If a GC contender attacks on the Great Orme, for example, viewers may be able to see how demanding that acceleration is rather than simply judging it from the gap opening behind.

On flatter stages, the same information could provide context around the power required to establish a breakaway, close a gap, survive in crosswinds or launch a sprint.
