The World Cycling Championship 2019 route saw possibly the wettest set of races in history! Based around Harrogate in Yorkshire, the women’s and U23 time trials were affected by huge swathes of standing water. Luckily for them, the men’s time trial had lovely weather. The luck was reversed for the road races though, with the women having the best of the weather and the men suffering huge downpours. The whole week was a tough introduction to riding in Yorkshire for some riders.

ToggleMads Pedersen was the somewhat surprising winner of the men’s race, outsprinting Matteo Trentin who was the favourite on the road at the time. Mathieu van der Poel had looked primed to take the victory having made the initial break but he ultimately fell away as the conditions took hold. The Australian Rohan Dennis took the time trial gold medal by some distance over the young Belgian Remco Evenepoel. The route and conditions on the day suited him perfectly.
The women’s races saw big, dominant displays from the winners. Chloe Dygert Owen absolutely smashed the time trial field. She was over 1’30” ahead of Anna van der Breggen and almost 2 minutes ahead of Annemiek van Vleuten. It’s rare to see those two riders so comprehensively beaten! Annemiek van Vleuten was able to put some of that right during the road race. She took on the peloton by making a break with over 100km left to race. No-one else joined her and her solo power was enough win by over 2 minutes. Her teammate Anna van der Breggen also broke away late on and took 2nd place. The bulk of the peloton came in over 5 minutes after Van Vleuten.
