Lorena Wiebes completed a clean sweep of the 2026 Tour of Chongming Island by winning Stage 3 in another bunch sprint, beating Lara Gillespie for the third consecutive day. Tang Xin took third for the Chinese national team, while Wiebes also secured the overall title after three victories from three stages.
The 108.6km final stage around Chongming New City Park followed the same broad pattern as the opening two days. With almost no climbing and no natural place to create a lasting gap, the race again came back together for the fastest riders. Wiebes started the day in control of the general classification and only needed to avoid trouble, but SD Worx-Protime still committed fully to another stage win.
How it unfolded
The flat circuit kept the race compact for long periods, with the main sprint teams unwilling to let a move gain enough time to threaten the overall standings. After winning Stage 1 and Stage 2, Wiebes had already built her advantage through stage placings and bonus seconds.
That left Gillespie as the rider with the clearest chance of challenging her directly at the finish. The UAE Team L’IMAD rider had been second on Stage 2 and again reached the final sprint in position to pressure Wiebes, while Human Powered Health, Lidl-Trek and the Chinese national team all brought fast riders into the closing kilometres.
SD Worx-Protime again delivered Wiebes into the final with numbers around her. The Dutch rider later credited Lisa van Belle and Barbara Guarischi for the lead-out work across the race, and the team were able to keep the finale under enough control to give Wiebes another clean run at the line.
Gillespie stayed close when the sprint opened, but Wiebes still had the final advantage. The gap was only a few metres, much tighter than many of Wiebes’ wins this season, but enough to make the result clear. Tang Xin came through for third, giving the home national team its best stage result of the race.
Kathrin Schweinberger finished fourth for Human Powered Health, ahead of Barbora Němcová and Luyao Zeng. Clara Copponi, Petra Ševčíková, Silvia Zanardi and Maggie Coles-Lyster completed the top 10, all in the same finishing group as the winner.
Wiebes seals the overall victory
The three-stage race ended with Wiebes first overall in 8:17:17, 15 seconds ahead of Gillespie. Copponi completed the GC podium at 26 seconds, with Schweinberger fourth and Coles-Lyster fifth.
Wiebes also finished the race as the leading points scorer, while the mountains classification underlined SD Worx-Protime’s control of the week. Wiebes and Van Belle filled the top two places there after collecting the limited climbing points available on the pan-flat route.
The result completed a perfect three-day run for Wiebes: three stages, three wins and the overall classification. With the Tour of Guangxi cancelled for 2026, Stage 3 also brought the Women’s WorldTour season to a close in China.
