Lorena Wiebes wins Tour of Chongming Island 2026 Stage 1

Lorena Wiebes opened the 2026 Tour of Chongming Island with a commanding sprint victory on Stage 1, beating Clara Copponi in Chongming after Team SD Worx-Protime controlled the finale and delivered their leader into a clear winning position.

The 110.4km opening stage was always expected to favour the fastest riders in the race. With almost no meaningful climbing and a reduced 69-rider field, the main question was whether anyone could disrupt the sprint teams before the return to Chongming. Instead, the day ended with the scenario outlined in our Tour of Chongming Island contenders preview: Wiebes arriving at the finish with a strong lead-out and enough road to use her speed.

How it unfolded

The opening stage stayed true to the character of the Tour of Chongming Island. The exposed roads and repeated changes of direction created the usual fight for position, but there was no climb capable of forcing a lasting selection. That left the teams with recognised sprinters to manage the race around the intermediate bonuses and the final run back towards Chongming.

SD Worx-Protime had the clearest incentive to keep control. Wiebes started the race as the strongest pure sprinter in the field, while Barbara Guarischi, Femke Markus, Lisa van Belle and Femke Gerritse gave the Dutchwoman a compact support group for the flat opening day. The smaller peloton also meant there were fewer teams willing or able to take responsibility for a long chase, but the same teams hoping to challenge Wiebes also needed a bunch finish for their own fast riders.

That common interest kept the race heading towards a sprint. Lidl-Trek worked to place Copponi for the finish, while UAE Team L’IMAD, Liv AlUla Jayco and Human Powered Health all had multiple riders capable of contesting a fast finale. The final start list had been reshaped significantly before the race, but there was still enough sprint depth to make positioning in the last kilometres important.

Once the finish came into view, SD Worx-Protime made their numerical strength count. Wiebes was brought into the sprint cleanly and, when she accelerated, Copponi was the closest challenger but could not come back alongside. Wiebes opened enough daylight to make the result clear before the line, taking the first stage of the three-day race and immediately putting herself in the position expected before the start.

For Copponi, second place is an important opening result in a race where the overall classification can be decided by repeated high sprint finishes and bonus seconds. Lidl-Trek arrived with only five riders, but the Frenchwoman has already shown that she can remain competitive across several flat stages rather than relying on a single sprint.

Wiebes gets exactly the start she wanted

The significance of the victory goes beyond another stage win. The 2026 Tour of Chongming Island is built around three flat days, so every finish offers Wiebes another opportunity to collect time bonuses and points. With Stage 2 again favouring the sprinters, her rivals now have to decide whether to keep racing her directly at the finish or become more aggressive around the intermediate bonuses and exposed sections.

Copponi has already shown she can stay closest when Wiebes reaches the line with a clean run. The challenge for Lidl-Trek, UAE Team L’IMAD, Liv AlUla Jayco and Human Powered Health is to prevent SD Worx-Protime from repeating the same controlled lead-out on the remaining stages. On terrain this flat, that may require using the wind, forcing splits or committing earlier rather than waiting for another direct sprint against the fastest rider in the race.
