The Giro Toscana Int. Femminile is a women’s race with a long history. First held in 1996 and won by the Swiss rider Barbara Heeb, it was created by the Fanini family as a way for them to give back after the death of Michela Fanini in a car accident when her small Peugeot left the road in 1994. Fanini was that year’s Giro d’Italia Femminile champion and was the Italian national champion 2 years before, already a strong palmares for the 21-year-old whose life was cut short so early.

ToggleWith such a long history, there are a number of major names who have won the race over the years. Susanne Ljungskog has been the most successful with 3 GC wins in 2002, 2003 and 2005. The Swede’s run was interrupted by Trixi Worrack with the likes of Diana Ziliute (2009), Judith Arndt (2008 & 2010), Megan Guarnier (2011) and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (2016 & 2017) also major winners of this stage race.
The Giro Toscana Int. Femminile has never been a WorldTour race but was seen as one of the best of the rest races in the women’s cycling calendar until recent years. It reached the previous highest HC level in 2013, roughly equivalent to the ProSeries nowadays, with Marianne Vos taking 3 stage wins that year before being demoted the following year.
This year’s race sees an opening prologue to introduce some early time gaps and then a trio of punchy stages. The climbs aren’t massive but will be enough to split the peloton properly and there is no obvious sprinter stage at all. The first road stage will probably be quiet until an uphill smash right at the end of the day with the following day similar but with a descent to the line will represent a chance for an attack to go clear and stay away. The final stage is the toughest one with repeated climbs designed to shake up the GC on the last day.
