The 206km route features five ascents of the Waseberg before turning towards the traditional finish on Mönckebergstraße.
The climb itself is short, but repeated use changes the problem considerably. Sprinters do not necessarily have to survive one decisive effort. They have to repeatedly regain position, respond to accelerations and retain enough teammates to control attacks afterwards.

Why the final hour is the part to watch
ADAC Cyclassics occupies an unusual position among WorldTour one-day races.
It is flat enough that some of the world’s fastest riders can realistically target victory, but there is enough climbing late in the route to prevent their teams simply treating the race as an extended lead-out.
One passage of the Waseberg is manageable for almost every WorldTour rider. Five passages create a very different problem.
Teams without an elite sprinter can repeatedly raise the pace, force the fast riders to chase back into position and gradually remove the domestiques who would normally control the closing kilometres. If enough damage is done, attacks over or immediately after the later climbs become much harder to bring back.
If a large field survives, the wide run into Hamburg swings the advantage back towards the sprinters.
That tension is the defining feature of the race.

Irish champion Rory Townsend joined the early breakaway and somehow remained ahead almost all the way to the line, taking the biggest victory of his career as the peloton closed rapidly behind.

A sprint team cannot simply assume an early break will disappear. The repeated Waseberg passages encourage attacks from behind, and those moves can disrupt the organised pursuit enough to give the original escape an unexpected chance.
