Lotta Henttala of EF Education-Oatly triumphed in the opening race of the 2025 Mallorca Challenge, the Trofeo Marratxi-Felanitx. The Finnish rider powered through the final corner with under 500 metres to go, securing victory ahead of new Canyon SRAM rider Chiara Consonni and Maggie Coles-Lyster, who finished second and third respectively.
The 129.1km race marked the start of the women’s European road racing season, featuring a mix of WorldTeams, Continental squads, ProTeams, and a Spanish national team. Departing Marratxi under clear skies, the peloton tackled rolling terrain, including a fourth-category climb 10km from the finish.
A breakaway of four riders animated the day. Afghanistan national champion Fariba Hashimi, Monica Castagna, Julie Sap, and Marina Garau worked together to establish a lead of 3:35 midway through the race. However, the gap began to diminish as the peloton, led by teams such as UAE Team ADQ and Movistar, increased the tempo.
Hashimi launched a late solo move on the flat roads with 14km remaining, but her effort was neutralised after Garau countered and the quartet reunited. Their collaboration faltered with just over 10km to go, and the break was caught as the peloton approached the final climb.
From there, the sprinters’ teams took over. EF Education-Oatly delivered Henttala perfectly into position. Coming up fast and late to a roundabout, the sprint trains were thrown into chaos. That helped ensure EF Education-Oatly were comfortably ahead going into a late left-hand corner and Lotta Henttala had to finish the sprint with a large gap over her rivals. Speaking after her win, Henttala said, โThe team did an incredible job today. They kept me protected throughout and placed me perfectly for the sprint. I just had to finish it off.โ
Consonni and Coles-Lyster rounded out the podium, while Dutch riders Sofie van Rooijen, Mylene de Zoete, and Marjolein van โt Geloof all finished in the top ten. The race sets the stage for an exciting three days of competition in Mallorca.
