Mavi Garcia wins 5th Spanish road race title

Mavi García has emerged victorious in the Spanish championship. The Liv Racing TeqFind cyclist outperformed Sara Martín and Mireia Benito by a significant margin after a long solo run. This marks García’s fifth title as the Spanish road champion, a record for all men and women in the Spanish national championships.

On Friday morning, García narrowly missed out on the gold in the Spanish time trial championship, with Mireia Bentio taking the victory. After a time trial from and back to Sevilla la Nueva, she was only a second behind Mireia Benito, the AG Insurance-Soudal-Quickstep rider achieving her first win as a professional cyclist.

A day later, victory was within the 39-year-old García’s grasp. On a hilly course, a front group including Garcia, Benito, Sara Martin and Sheyla Gutierrez were solidly clear of the bunch. At around thirty kilometres from the finish line, Mavi Garcia launched an attack that no one could counter. Benito and Martin were able to ride together and contest the medals but the race disappeared into the distance ahead of them. The Liv Racing TeqFind cyclist then rode solo to the finish line. Martín and Benito claimed second and third places respectively.

For Garcia and her Liv Racing TeqFind team, it was the first victory of the 2023 season as they find themselves slowly dropping closer to the Women’s WorldTour relegation battle.
