After months of looking forward to it, the cycling season has finally started. On Saturday, the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad was the first women’s race of the season. A hard race to start with, having all top teams in the peloton. Team Hitec Products rode a good race, finishing with three riders, all in the second group.
The peloton split in the final of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and world champion Anna van der Breggen won solo. On 65th place, Amalie Lutro was the first rider of Team Hitec Products to finish and that was a surprise for her. “It went a lot better than I expected”, she looks back. “The past months haven’t been optimal and I was very unsure about what to hope for. Therefore I am surprised about the outcome.”
If there is one thing sure, then it is that the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is a nervous race, as it is the first classic of each season. “There were so much nerves before the start today, but it was so much fun when the start sign was given. The first part of the race was kind of chaotic and even though it wasn’t super hard in the beginning, it was stressful for the mind. When we first started the section parts, the race got harder and more settled.”
‘Super cool to be back racing’
The peloton broke in two pieces and the group with favourites fought for the win. Amalie: “Together with Mieke and Caroline, I ended up in a group that stayed together until the finish line. We tried working together towards the end, but me and Mieke lost each other the last kilometre. So the result wasn’t the best, but it was super cool to be back racing, getting some speed in the legs and finally ride with all my new teamies!”
