A quick guide to the Tour de France 2022

Tour de France 2022 route

The Tour de France 2022 route takes riders from Copenhagen in Denmark for the Grand Depart before heading back to Northern France for Stage 4. The riders begin to drift Southwards, heading into the Vosges for a legendary gravel finish on the La Super Planche des Belles Filles. There’s not much rest afterwards as the peloton heads into the Alpes and another legendary climb in the Alpe d’Huez – its first inclusion since 2018.

A couple of transition stages across the Massif Central see us visit a regular stage town of Carcassonne with its castle. The Pyrenees will prove their usual test before a final time trial to Rocamadour and the classic final on the Champs Elysees.

Last 5 Tour de France winners

It feels like an absolute age since the Team Sky/Ineos Grenadiers dominance at the Tour de France ended. The Chris Froome era ended in 2017 as he finished 3rd in 2018 supporting teammate Geraint Thomas to the victory. There was a nice mirror there as both riders rode the Tour de France on the same team, Barloworld, 10 years before. Colombian Egan Bernal did what compatriot Nairo Quintana couldn’t manage and became a Tour de France winner. Since then it’s been Slovenian dominance. Roglič looked on course to win the 2020 edition but Tadej Pogačar beat him to it in the last time trial. The 2021 Tour de France was a procession with Tadej Pogačar never in doubt of retaining his title.

Tour de France Green Jersey

The Green Jersey or the ‘sprinters jersey’ will be hotly contested this year due to the relative lack of obvious, flat stages. Wout van Aert is the big favourite to take his first green jersey in Tour de France 2022. Previous winners Sam Bennett and Mark Cavendish don’t look like they’ll be racing this year. Unlike Cavendish, Peter Sagan will be racing but doesn’t look to quite have the previous form that saw him win the green jersey at the Tour de France 7 times. Mathieu van der Poel has already said that he’s not interested in fighting for the green jersey and will focus on stage wins.
