Vollering to lead Dutch team at 2024 World Championships in Zürich

Demi Vollering

Demi Vollering has been named the leading rider for the Netherlands at the upcoming World Cycling Championships in Zürich at the end of September. Coach Loes Gunnewijk announced this during the team presentation. The Dutch team features promising names like Puck Pieterse and Shirin van Anrooij, Tour revelation Pauliena Rooijakkers, and the experienced Marianne Vos.

The road race course is set to be demanding. It includes a lap around the Greifensee, followed by the climb up Pfannenstiel, finishing with a circuit in Zürich. With a total of 2,400 metres of elevation, it promises to be a tough race where Vollering, along with the team, will aim for gold. “I look forward to seeing this group of riders in action,” said Gunnewijk.

In addition to Vollering, Pieterse, Van Anrooij, Rooijakkers, and Vos, Riejanne Markus and Mischa Bredewold are also gearing up for the road race in Zürich. There is no place in the team for Karlijn Swinkels, Thalita de Jong, Amber Kraak, Yara Kastelijn, or Lucinda Brand.

For the time trial, Vollering has already secured her spot, with only two places available for the Netherlands. Ellen van Dijk and Riejanne Markus are still in contention for the final spot. “Who will join Demi will be decided after the European Championships,” said the coach.

The 2024 World Cycling Championships are scheduled to take place from 22nd-29th September in Zürich.
