The best bike shop in York depends on what you need: a new commuter, an e-bike diagnosis, a fitting appointment or a repair before a weekend ride. This shortlist separates the shops’ advertised services from general recommendations, so you can call the right workshop before transporting the bike across the city.
Cycle Heaven
Cycle Heaven has three York locations with different roles. Its Hospital Fields Road headquarters in Fulford is the main showroom for bikes, clothing and accessories, with a café on site. The Station and Angel locations are the main repair workshops. Check which branch handles your job when booking rather than assuming every service is available everywhere.
For a purchase, ask whether the model and frame size you want are physically available to try. For a repair, describe the bike and the problem in advance. A tyre replacement and an electronic drivetrain fault can require very different parts, time and equipment.
Fulford Cycles
Fulford Cycles advertises bike sales, servicing and its eBike Medic service centre. That makes it worth contacting for an e-bike enquiry, but establish that the workshop supports your particular motor and battery system before booking. “E-bike servicing” does not mean every brand’s diagnostics or warranty work is available.
If you already know the component that needs attention, send a photograph of its model number. If not, explain the symptom without committing to a replacement: a noise under load may need diagnosis before parts are ordered. Our bike-noise troubleshooting guide can help you describe it.
York Cycleworks: a former shop, now closed

York Cycleworks on Lawrence Street announced its closure at the end of September 2025. The photograph above is retained as an archive image, not a recommendation to visit an operating shop. Old directory entries and a surviving website can still appear in searches, so use another workshop for a new booking.
CycleStreet
CycleStreet on Layerthorpe advertises workshop servicing and repairs alongside bike sales. Ask about turnaround time and parts availability when booking, particularly if the repair needs completing before a trip. A quoted service package may not include replacement components or every specialist job.
For a new bike, compare fit and the support offered after purchase as well as the ticket price. The gravel-bike buying guide gives a useful framework for discussing tyre clearance, gearing and riding position with a shop.
How to choose and book
Give the shop the bike brand, approximate age, brake and gear type, and a clear description of the fault. Ask whether there is a diagnostic charge, whether the estimate includes parts and VAT, and whether they will contact you before exceeding an agreed budget. Bring any keys, relevant battery or charger only as requested.
For a fitting appointment, check what the session includes and whether follow-up adjustments are offered. For urgent repairs, phone first; a shop being open does not mean a mechanic or suitable replacement part is immediately available.
Opening times, stock and service capacity change. Confirm them with the chosen shop before travelling, and collect the bike with enough time for a short test ride before an important event. If you are travelling elsewhere, we also have a guide to bike shops in Cambridge.
