Wiebes wins but is relegated, teammate Vollering wins Stage 2 of Vuelta a Burgos

Demi Vollering 2023 Vuelta Burgos Stage 2

Demi Vollering has won the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas. The Dutch cyclist won the sprint in Lerma after the stage was characterised by echelons. Lorena Wiebes crossed the line first, but the winner of Stage One was relegated to third place due to a manoeuvre during the sprint. Chloe Dygert secured second place.

The second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas covered 118.9 kilometres. The cyclists had to ride predominantly flat roads from Sotresgudo to Lerma, although there were a few hills along the route. Lorena Wiebes started the stage as the leader after convincingly winning the sprint on Thursday ahead of Elisa Balsamo and Chloe Dygert.

There was no early breakaway on Friday. This was due to the strong wind, which was conducive to forming echelons throughout the day. The peloton kept getting smaller and smaller, and cyclists like Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, Grace Brown and Silvia Persico had to drop out. Cyclists like Demi Vollering, Wiebes, Dygert, Balsamo, Lucinda Brand and Shirin van Anrooij were vigilant and made it into the leading group.

This small group ultimately rode together to the finish line in Lerma, where a sprint decided who could raise their hands in victory on Friday. However, the cyclists had to be cautious in the final kilometres, as the wind was strong at every moment. Brodie Chapman and Alexander Manly were caught off-guard in the finale and couldn’t keep up.

In the sprint in Lerma, there was nothing to do against Wiebes. The Dutch sprinter received an impressive lead-out from Vollering, who also finished second. Dygert claimed third place. The rest of the first group couldn’t keep up with Vollering’s pace in the final few hundred metres and came in a bit behind. Thanks to her victory, Wiebes also remains the leader in the general classification.

SD Worx announced on social media that Wiebes has been relegated to third place in the results. The European champion made a dangerous manoeuvre in the final few hundred metres, hindering Dygert. Vollering, who crossed the finish line second, was therefore declared the winner of stage two.

“Lorena is today’s unequivocal winner in my book. As a team, we dictated the tempo of the race, executing our strategy flawlessly. Marlen Reusser delivered an exceptional lead-out; I rode aggressively uphill, enabling Lorena to subsequently make her move. We managed to finish as first and second, which clearly speaks volumes about the exemplary teamwork of SD Worx. The race began at an intense pace.

Collectively, we were aware that a solid start was crucial. Fortunately, we managed to secure a position in the leading group. Our primary focus was not the classification, but rather securing the stage win. We prioritised teamwork, but of course, gaining time over other competitors was a welcome advantage,”
