Richard Carapaz has mathematically secured the mountains classification at the 2026 Tour de France.
The Ecuadorian will be awarded the polka dot jersey in Paris on Sunday provided he completes Stage 21, after taking maximum points across the opening three major climbs of Stage 20.
Before the race even reached the Col de Sarenne and final approach to Alpe d’Huez, Carapaz had already collected 50 points on the day.
He took 20 points on the Col de la Croix de Fer, 10 on the Col du Télégraphe and another 20 on the Col du Galibier.
That haul put the classification beyond the reach of his rivals and completed a remarkable turnaround after Stage 18 had brought him back into the polka dot fight with victory at Orcières-Merlette.
Carapaz dominated the mountain points from the start
Stage 20 was always going to decide the polka dot jersey.
Carapaz started the day with only a narrow advantage, which meant there was no realistic option to defend passively.
He had to attack.
That is exactly what he did.
On the Col de la Croix de Fer, Carapaz took the full 20 points, with Valentin Paret-Peintre second for 15.
That immediately strengthened his position and forced the rest of the contenders to keep chasing.
On the Télégraphe, Carapaz again led the race over the summit and added another 10 points.
By then, the classification was already swinging heavily in his favour.
The decisive moment came on the Galibier.
Maximum points on the Galibier sealed it
Carapaz crossed the Col du Galibier first and collected another 20 points, along with the prestige of the Souvenir Henri Desgrange.
Sepp Kuss was second for 15 points, with Jai Hindley third for 12.
That moved Carapaz to 50 points earned on Stage 20 before the Sarenne had even started.
At that point, the maths became decisive.
There were still points available later in the stage, but not enough for any rival to overturn the advantage Carapaz had created.
The battle for the jersey was over.
The Galibier was always likely to be one of the decisive climbs in the competition, with ProCyclingUK’s 2026 climbers guide identifying the huge concentration of mountain points in the final Alpine stages as the key to the classification.

Valentin Paret-Peintre was one of the main threats heading into the final Alpine block and initially stayed in the fight.
He took 15 points on the Croix de Fer, keeping pressure on Carapaz.
But he could not continue scoring at the same rate.
Carapaz kept accumulating points on every major climb.
That was the difference.
The Ecuadorian did not need one spectacular move late in the stage. He built the classification through repeated maximum scores.
By the time the race crossed the Galibier, Paret-Peintre no longer had enough opportunities left to reverse the result.
Only two days earlier, the mountains battle had been separated by a single point after Stage 18.
Stage 20 turned that uncertainty into a mathematical certainty.
Pogačar can no longer take the jersey
Tadej Pogačar had also remained mathematically in contention before Stage 20.
Indeed, after Stage 18 he led the classification by one point, having accumulated a large part of his total simply through winning mountain stages and riding at the front of the GC race.

Carapaz stopped that happening.
Once he collected the full 50 points across the Croix de Fer, Télégraphe and Galibier, Pogačar could no longer close the gap.
Carapaz had beaten him through a completely different method.
Breakaways.
Aggressive positioning.
Repeated attacks for summit points.
Stage 20 rewarded exactly that kind of racing.
Why the jersey is now mathematically secure
The key point is that Carapaz has built an advantage greater than the maximum number of points any rival can still collect before Paris.
Even with the Col de Sarenne and the final categorised sections still to come, the remaining points cannot overturn the classification.
Sunday’s Stage 21 offers only minimal mountain points.
The Montmartre climbs are Category 4, meaning they carry only a single point for first place.
So even in the most extreme scenario, no rider can now score enough to pass Carapaz.

Carapaz still has to reach Paris
There is one technical qualification.
Carapaz has mathematically secured the classification, but he must complete Stage 21 to be officially awarded the jersey.
Classification winners have to finish the Tour.
So while the points battle is over, Carapaz still needs to reach the Champs-Élysées on Sunday.
Assuming he does, he will be crowned the 2026 Tour de France King of the Mountains.
A jersey won through aggressive racing
Carapaz’s route to the polka dot jersey has been built around exactly the kind of racing the classification is supposed to reward.
He has repeatedly gone into breakaways.
He has attacked on the biggest climbs.
And on the decisive mountain day, he took maximum points on the Croix de Fer, Télégraphe and Galibier.
The Stage 18 win at Orcières-Merlette gave him the momentum.
The final Alpine weekend converted that into control of the classification.
That 50-point haul on Stage 20 removed any remaining uncertainty.
