Dutch rider Maaike Boogaard, a versatile presence in womenโs cycling, is set to join VolkerWessels Cycling Team for the next two seasons, marking her debut with a Dutch squad. The 26-year-old, who spent recent seasons racing with AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step, signed a two-year contract, bringing both her all-round skills and experience to the team.
Boogaard, excited about her new journey, expressed a strong sense of belonging from the outset. โFrom my first conversation with the team, it immediately felt like coming home,โ she shared, noting that the teamโs unity and collective drive for top results resonated with her. โThe team spirit and the determination to aim for the highest results together is something that attracted me right away.โ
A versatile rider
VolkerWesselsโ team manager, Marnix Drysdale, highlighted Boogaardโs adaptability, praising her strength across multiple disciplines. โMaaike is a true all-round rider, who not only excels in stage races but also delivers solid performances in prologues or short time trials,โ he said. โSheโs been in the elite womenโs peloton for eight years, but next season will be her first with a Dutch team. Weโre looking forward to working with her.โ
Boogaardโs track record speaks for itself. She has claimed two professional wins so far, taking victory at the 2022 EPZ Omloop van Borsele and the 2024 Grand Prix International dโIsbergues. This season, she also showed impressive form at the Baloise Ladies Tour, finishing fourth overall after securing eighth in the prologue and fourth in the individual time trial.
Mentorship role and personal growth
Reflecting on her future with VolkerWessels, Boogaard is eager not only to push her own limits but also to guide younger talents within the team. โThis team offers me a way to reach my full potential but also allows me to share my experience with the younger generation,โ she said. With VolkerWessels already showcasing its capabilities across numerous races this season, Boogaard added, โI am more than motivated to be a part of this ambitious team.โ
Boogaard joins alongside Lonneke Uneken, another recent addition to the squad. Meanwhile, Sofie van Rooijen has transferred to UAE Team ADQ, while Scarlett Souren has renewed her commitment with VolkerWessels, strengthening the teamโs promising roster for the coming seasons.
